Emilie United Methodist Church (EUMC) Director of Music Job Description

Position Name: Director of Music             

Status/Hours: Part-Time, 20-25hrs/week

Salary: $25,000 though willing to negotiate for exceptional candidate


Function of This Position

At Emilie United Methodist Church (EUMC), the position of Director of Music is considered a ministry position.   Therefore, the person in this position needs to have a Christian commitment and be able to conduct themselves accordingly (use/possession of tobacco products, cigarettes/smoking, vaping (e. cigarettes), alcohol and/or any controlled substances on church property is prohibited).  A high degree of confidentiality and professionalism is required.  This position is responsible for all aspects of the music ministry of the church.

Position Summary: The ideal candidate will have excellent keyboard proficiency and be able to direct both our sanctuary choir and bell choir.  Proficient vocalist preferred.

The Director of Music is responsible for the planning, preparation, and presentation of music which is a vital part of worship at Emilie UMC.

Duties and Responsibilities:

-In coordination with the Pastor, select appropriate music for all segments of the traditional worship service in keeping with the liturgical church calendar and the Pastor’s weekly theme and/or message.

-Play the organ and/or piano for traditional worship services

-Plan special music where appropriate in the worship service; rehearse and accompany performers when needed.

-Choose music for choirs to perform and maintain the music library. Direct the choirs; plan and lead choir and bell rehearsals which practice weekly during September – May.

-Coordinate and manage children’s music/choir.

-In addition to Sunday morning worship, the Director of Music will be responsible for music at other services including Advent, Christmas, and Lent. The choir has traditionally performed a cantata during Advent as well as Lent.

-The Director of Music works closely with the pastors and attends staff meetings as necessary.

-Schedule piano tuner and maintenance checks on other instruments as needed.

Qualifications

-Proficient vocalist preferred and must be able to work with existing instruments which includes:

~ Allen Renaissance 3-Manual Organ and Yamaha C5 Grand Piano (sanctuary)

~ Baby Grand Piano (older model) and a Yamaha CP300 Digital board (music room)

~ 4 Octave Schulmerich Handbells and 2 Octave Suzuki Hand chimes (bell choir)

-Individual must be organized, able to effectively prioritize work, detailed oriented, flexible, and able to multi-task and work independently to meet agreed upon timelines. 

-Must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal), excellent interpersonal skills and be able to communicate in a respectful manner to all persons.

-Must treat all information in a confidential manner.  A breach of confidentiality can result in dismissal.

-Must have a minimum of 3-5 years working experience in church music ministry and a thorough knowledge of sacred music.

-A Bachelor of Music degree at minimum is preferred but will consider candidates with undergraduate degree in a music-related field (i.e., teacher) or equivalent CEU training in music ministry.
